About Merkato's Ater Kik Wat

Ater Kik Wat (yellow split pea stew) is one of Ethiopia's most comforting home-cooked dishes. At Merkato, dried yellow split peas are slow-simmered with sautéed onions, turmeric, and mild spices until soft and creamy. Unlike the fiery berbere-spiked wots, Ater Kik Wat is naturally mild and golden in colour — making it a wonderful contrast on the injera platter and a great entry point for spice-sensitive diners.

Rich in plant protein and fibre, Ater Kik Wat is a nutritious, filling, and delicious choice. It is a key component of Merkato's celebrated Vegetarian Combo and is also available as a standalone dish. Its mild, comforting flavour makes it popular with children and those new to Ethiopian cuisine.

"Merkato is my favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. Everything, from the decor and music, to the food, to the proprietress, perfectly emulates the style of a typical Ethiopian cafe. Never crowded, you won't be rushed as you select from an incredible variety of dishes. Serving sizes are large despite the inexpensive prices."

"We were served by the friendly owner of the restaurant, and he suggested the mixed platter, which had seven different dishes (three meat and four vegetable based). Eating Ethiopian style — no utensils, just hands aided by the spongy flatbread — was a fun and unique experience. The total bill was only $50 Cdn all in, so it certainly was good value."
