About Merkato's Miser Wat

Miser Wat (red lentil stew) is a staple of Ethiopian cuisine and a cornerstone of the Merkato menu. Red lentils are slow-cooked in a sauce of berbere (a complex Ethiopian spice blend featuring chili, fenugreek, coriander, and more), onions, and kibbeh until they form a thick, richly flavoured stew. The result is earthy, warming, and deeply satisfying.

Naturally vegan and high in protein and fibre, Miser Wat is a nutritional powerhouse that proves plant-based eating can be extraordinarily flavourful. At Merkato, it is served as part of the Vegetarian Combo or as a standalone dish on injera. Imported gluten-free Ye'Teff Injera is available upon request.

"Merkato is my favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. Everything, from the decor and music, to the food, to the proprietress, perfectly emulates the style of a typical Ethiopian cafe. Never crowded, you won't be rushed as you select from an incredible variety of dishes. Serving sizes are large despite the inexpensive prices."

"We were served by the friendly owner of the restaurant, and he suggested the mixed platter, which had seven different dishes (three meat and four vegetable based). Eating Ethiopian style — no utensils, just hands aided by the spongy flatbread — was a fun and unique experience. The total bill was only $50 Cdn all in, so it certainly was good value."
